In het historische centrum van Utrecht is sinds september 1999 het prestigieuze Grand Hotel Karel V geopend. De realisatie is het gevolg van een opvallende restauratie van de voormalige Landcommanderij van de Ridderlijke Duitse Orde. Dit gebouwencomplex, lokaal bekend als het Duitse Huis, dateert uit de veertiende eeuw. Keizer Karel V verbleef hier, samen met zijn zuster Maria van Hongarije, voor het bijwonen van de Kapittelvergadering van de Orde van het Gulden Vlies in 1546. The realisation is the result of a striking renovation of the former headquarters of the German Knights Order.
This block of buildings, locally known as the German house, dates from the fourteenth century. Emperor Charles V stayed here, together with his sister, Maria of Hungary, and attended the Chapter Meeting of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1546.
These names with historic importance are proudly remembered in this magnificent building.
